Adding a Map to Web ContentSubmitted by Administrator on Fri, Mar 20 2009 - 14:47 |
Overview
It's often very useful when providing web content to provide a map of the associated location to help orient the reader. This page explains how to do this for an embedded map and for a map link. This page documents how to do this in the context of creating an event, but it can be used anywhere.
Create an embedded map
- Log on and click Create content -> Event as usual
- Fill in the usual event details and description
- Open a new empty browser window or tab, and go to http://maps.google.co.uk/ or http://maps.google.com in North America
- In the web form entry box enter the postcode of the location of your event, or the town or region, and press the Search Maps button
- In the presented map, click the underlined Link field at the extreme right of the map page
- In the pull-down frame, click the Customise and preview embedded map field
- In the Customize section of the new window, select Medium as the Map size
- In the Preview section, zoom the map in and out using the + and - icons and centre it using the arrow icons until you are happy with the presentation
- In the Copy and paste section, click in the inner box showing the HTML text, and then use the context menu (right mouse button) to successively Select All, then Copy to the clipboard
- Return to the NVFA rich text editor window, click the Source button to flip to HTML source view, paste in the map HTML text (usually at the bottom) and then click the Source button again to return to normal edit mode
- The map shows only as a white box when viewed in the rich text editor, this is normal and it will display correctly when saved
- Click OK to return to the new Event page, click the Input Format field and ensure the Full HTML entry is set
- Click Save to save the event which should now show the map correctly
Create a map link
- Log on and click Create content -> Event as usual
- Fill in the usual event details and description
- Open a new empty browser window or tab, and go to http://maps.google.co.uk/ or http://maps.google.com in North America
- In the web form entry box enter the postcode of the location of your event, or the town or region, and press the Search Maps button
- Zoom the map in and out using the + and - icons and centre it using the arrow icons until you are happy with the presentation
- In the presented map, click the underlined Link field at the extreme right of the map page
- In the Paste link in email section, use the context menu (right mouse button) to Copy the hypertext link to the clipboard
- Return to the NVFA rich text editor window, select the required link text, press control-L and paste in the link and press OK
- Click OK to return to the new Event page, click the Input Format field and ensure the Full HTML entry is set
- Click Save to save the event which should now show the map correctly
