Working with Images

Overview

Profiled and non-profiled users of the NVFA website may upload images to any image gallery. Profiled users have the addional privilege of uploading images for including in their own web pages. Here we provide detailed instructions on working with images - you may wish to print this page for reference purposes.

Image Preparation

Prior to uploading any image, you need to check its dimensions in pixels. Generally speaking, it is not feasible to upload images greater than 800x600 pixels. So, if your image came from a modern digital camera you will probably need to resize it after it has been transferred onto your computer (via USB cable usually). Then run an image resize program as follows:

  • If you are on Windows XP, download and run file XP PowerToys Image Resizer. After installation, you will find a new context menu (right mouse button) for files and directories entitled Resize Pictures which brings up a dialog box with various options. Your original pictures are unaltered as a smaller copy with a different name is made.
  • If you are on Windows Vista, download and run the ImageResizer-1.1.msi file from SourceForge. This program operates in a similar way to the XP version. You may get various security warnings which may in this instance be ignored.
  • If you are on Mac OS X, read Resizing an Image using iPhoto .

Once the image has been resized to an acceptable value, proceed to either of the next steps as appropriate.

Adding an Image to an Image Gallery

You may add an image to an image gallery by the following operations:

  • Follow the Create content / Image link in the navigation block on the upper left of the web page
  • Enter a brief informative text in the Title entry field
  • Click the Browse button to the right of the Image: entry box - this brings up a file dialog box
  • Navigate in the file dialog box to where your image (a .jpg file) is stored on your computer
  • Select the image file in the file dialog box, then press OK - the image file will then be uploaded
  • Back in the web page, select an entry from the Image Galleries pulldown list
  • Tick the Rebuild derivative images checkbox
  • If desired, enter some descriptive text in the Body text area
  • Finish by clicking the Save button at the bottom of the web page

Including an Image in a Web Page

Assuming you are a profiled user and are using the Rich Text Editor to prepare a web page, you may include images in it by the following operations:

  • click the Insert/Edit Image icon on the toolbar, which then presents an image properties dialog
  • click the Browse Server button, which presents a server (remote) directory listing dialog
  • click the Upload button in the bottom right, which presents a local file dialog box
  • navigate to the local image file on your computer, then click OK which causes the image file to be uploaded, which may take some time
  • when the new file appears in the server directory listing, click it to select that image and return to the image properties dialog
  • optionally, it is often useful to then set the Align pulldown to allow text to flow around the image (a value of Left is most common)
  • click the OK button in the image properties dialog to complete the process
